How We Can Petition to Decertify SEIU

CPPEA members are working for better union representationWhen members (or non-members) no longer want to be represented by their current Union, they have the option to circulate and sign a petition asking for a vote. After 30 percent or more of the workers in a bargaining unit sign that petition, it is delivered to the State PERB and an election to decertify that union, and select a replacement union as their exclusive representative, is granted. Once the Petition to Decertify is submitted, and the option to have an election is granted by the PERB, an election ballot is sent to every state worker (whether union member, or not) that qualifies to be represented by the Union (being Decertified). On that Decertification Ballot you will have the option to select any Union on that Ballot, including keeping the incumbent Union, SEIU.

Obviously, if you are dissatisfied with the SEIU you should vote for one of the other Unions on that ballot.  Doing so will “Decertify” SEIU and elect the replacement Union at the same time, (just as an election for the President of the US will “decertify” the incumbent President and “elect” the new President of the US all on the same ballot). The Decertification Election requires only a majority of the responding voter’s ballots to agree on who will be their replacement Union (example: 95,000 ballots mailed to qualified State Workers, and only 10,000 Decertification ballots are returned to the PERB.  Out of the 10,000 returned ballots,  5001 voted for SEIU, that will keep SEIU as the our Union). SEIU will ensure all their Union staff of volunteer state workers will vote and submit their ballots.  That is why it is very important to get as many as possible qualified voters to participate in the Decertification Election.

The Future of all State Workers jobs, wages, and benefits, depends on all qualified voters participating in the Decertification election.  That means your employment can be influenced by the actions (or inactions) of your coworkers. .
